Nature of Science

With NGSS, there is no longer a chapter 1 in your textbook about the nature of science. This is because SEPs should be taught in conjunction with scientific inquiry. Truly understanding SEPs (just like vocabulary) require it to be learned in context, not in isolation. It is important throughout the year to have students connect what they are doing to SEP skills. Say things like: Scientists communicate to compare data. Explain to me how you did that today.

One of my favorite ways to incorporate the nature of science is through crime scene investigations. Students apply the skills in a real-world situation. I have made a variety of  kid-friendly, seasonal-based CSIs. They each require students to connect what they are doing to nature of science skills. They can be done with minor prep but offer options to take it up a notch, if you choose.
